The following provides an annual summary of the competitions, venues and winners. More detailed scores will still be retained in the old website archives.

The Origins of HGS

Hillcrest Golf Society was conceived at a Christmas gathering on 27th December 1995 at 35 Hillcrest Avenue, Nether Poppleton, York by Ken Mackay, Trevor Jones and Peter Yates. A follow-up meeting was held at 33 Hillcrest Avenue on 28th February 1996 with the following Hillcrest Avenue residents present: Ken Mackay, Trevor Jones, Mark Wray, John Pollock, Alan Hunter, Keith Nicholson, Hugh Fowles and Roger Plows. (Peter Yates decided to stay with the Fox Inn Golf Society & John Brown was on holiday in Australia). Each Hillcrest Avenue resident was asked to invite a guest to get involved, and the new society was born.

The first golf day was held at Kirkbymoorside on 3rd May 1996, with Mark Wray hitting the first ball on the par 3 first hole. Over the subsequent years membership has increased from the initial number to just below 50, with members joining from other parts of York and the surrounding areas.

A President’s Cup competition has been held each year over 5 rounds on various courses within 60 miles (1 1/2 hours) drive from Poppleton and has allowed members to enjoy the wonderful range of hillside, parkland and seaside courses that this part of the country is lucky to have access to. We also introduced very popular short golf trips for members to go further afield in the UK, and even ventured for several years into Portugal and Spain.

Apart from the golf, the social side of the society is very important to members, with an HGS Christmas Dinner being held every year and the occasional summer barbecue.
